Activities & Academic Societies
Through an involvement in a broad range of activities, students flourish in their own way.
From music and sport to debate and creative pursuits, our extensive activities programme offers something for everyone. Students can explore existing interests or discover new passions, with the flexibility to change their selections each term. At Bedales Senior, academic societies provide opportunities to delve deeper into subjects, exchange ideas and engage in meaningful debate beyond the classroom. Sixth Form students take the opportunity to lead some of these activities and give back to the community that benefited them.

Our vision for sport at Bedales is ‘to inspire a lifelong passion for sport and physical activity by providing the appropriate environment, opportunities, encouragement to empower all students to join a team or pursue individual goals'.
Our sporting programme combines broad participation and enjoyment of regular exercise with competitive team sport. We offer access to top quality coaching, outstanding facilities, a competitive spirit (but with strong emphasis on engagement and seeking individual improvement, at whatever level), and opportunities for gifted and talented sports players to develop elite skills. We also have a newly refurbished multi gym with specific spaces for strength training and cardiovascular exercise and there are daily opportunities for all students to get involved in the sports that they enjoy with or without the need to be in a team and attend fixtures.
Our Bedales Tennis Club is going from strength to strength with six newly refurbished floodlit courts and five coaches delivering lessons to over 20% of our student body across the Whole School.

In line with our motto, 'work of each for weal of all', community service is woven throughout the Bedales experience. From our Pre-prep children visiting the local care home and Prep students reading to younger children at local primary schools to Sixth Form students mentoring peers and supporting school visitors, every student contributes to something bigger than themselves.
Through partnerships with local organisations and schools, students develop empathy, leadership skills and a genuine sense of civic responsibility - learning that education extends far beyond the classroom and into making a positive difference in the wider world.

The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme is a particularly popular option at Bedales Senior, taking advantage of the school's location in the South Downs National Park, which stretches across Hampshire, West and East Sussex.
There are three levels of the Award: Bronze, Silver and Gold. These can be started when students are 13, 14 and 16 respectively. Many students progress all the way through to their Gold Award.
At each level there are four sections: Volunteering, Physical Recreation, Skills and Expedition, and for Gold only, an additional residential group activity. Qualified staff are responsible for overseeing the expedition training and students are themselves responsible for the other sections.
We encourage as many students as possible in Block 3 to take on the Bronze Award. It is possible to complete all four sections in Block 3 through our Activities programme. The same applies for the Silver Award in Block 4.
