Taught by subject specialists with backgrounds in academia and industry, our IGCSE and A Level courses in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and Psychology A Level provide students with a diverse knowledge of scientific concepts and their real-world applications. Drawing upon a wealth of varied expertise, our faculty staff are able to support students in pursuing individual interests in specific fields and careers, nurturing their passions and fostering a genuine love of learning.
Across the Sciences, our student-centred teaching philosophy promotes curiosity, inquiry and the development of creative, critical thinking skills that allow students to succeed in the 21st century. We place emphasis on practical work and building up problem-solving abilities, frequently using the natural biodiversity of the Bedales estate in lessons to enrich understanding beyond the classroom. Students are empowered to take their learning further, with vast opportunities for scientific exploration through co-curricular activities, external lectures, field trips and the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme.
In Block 3 students start the IGCSE Science course. There is a strong emphasis on the scientific method and wherever possible a practical investigation will form part of the learning process. Throughout the course students are encouraged to be reflective about their learning and take responsibility for their progress.
The topics covered are:
- Cells, Tissues and Organs – a study of the organisation of plants and animals
- Respiration - the chemical processes going on inside living things
- Biological Molecules – the building blocks of life
- Ecology – the study of organisms in their natural habitat.
Assessment is by regular marking of weekly preps, a test at the end of each topic and an end of year examination.
