Materials for Green Energy - Crystal Gazing on the Atomic Scale

The annual Eckersley Lecture will return to Bedales this March, when chemist Professor Saiful Islam will talk about the subject of his research on energy materials using 3D glasses!

Brief profile

Saiful Islam is Professor of Materials Science at the University of Oxford. He grew up in Crouch End, London and obtained his Chemistry degree and PhD from University College London, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Eastman Kodak Labs, New York, USA. He returned to the UK to the University of Surrey and was then appointed Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Bath in 2006, before joining Oxford in 2022.

His research has been recognised with several awards including the 2022 Royal Society Hughes Medal and the 2020 American Chemical Society Storch Award in Energy Chemistry. Saiful presented the BBC Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2016 with 3.8 million viewers. He is a Patron of Humanists UK and when not exploring new materials, he enjoys family breaks (as a dad of two), football, films and indie music.

Lecture summary

The supply of low carbon energy is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Major breakthroughs in clean energy technologies require advances in new materials and underpinning science. With the aid of 3D glasses, this talk describes the materials science of lithium batteries in electric vehicles and novel compounds for next-generation solar cells, as well as highlighting the use of computer modelling to gain atomic-scale insights.
